Both plate options have there key attractive points which are outlined below:
Cast Iron Plates:
- Cast iron plates are made from solid iron and are a more traditional type of weight plate used in strength training.
- Cast iron plates are thinner than bumper plates, which means you can fit more weight on a barbell.
- They are not designed to be dropped from overhead, as they can crack or break, potentially causing damage to the floor or the plates themselves.
Bumper Plates:
- Bumper plates are made from rubber, with a metal insert in the center.
- They are designed for Olympic weightlifting and CrossFit-style workouts where the weights are frequently dropped from overhead, such as during cleans, snatches, and overhead lifts.
- Bumper plates are more shock-absorbent than cast iron plates, making them safer for dropping from height and reducing the risk of damage to the floor or the plates.
